45L Nano Aquarium

  • Hallo,

My name is Ralph and I live in the USA. I found out about this site after seeing Mark's presentation of a LED system on 'Reef2Reef'. I hope that you all find this modest tank, and some of the methods used, of interest. I will attempt the tank description in German below:

  • Hello Ralph,

thank you for your presentation. It looks really nice and the corals in your tank are thriving very well. I like the 'natural' setting and the idea to work without chemicals. I just didn't get how your filtration works. What is that with the bottles...you don't have a protein skimmer, right?

One question is of special interest to me: Why don't you use natural seawater directly taken from your nearby ocean. Or do you live more inside California, away from the coast.

We, here in Germany, have a retailer that recently started selling NSW (natural seawater) and people here are very excited about that idea.

What do you think about that?

Once again, I have to say that you have an awesome tank and a good hand for our hobby.
Just the size of the tank seems to be a bit small for clowns , but for the reason that these fish are anyway rather swimming together in a smaller radius, it seems to be okay for them. They look pretty healthy and so do all of your inhabitants...

Best regards and 'salty' greetings to abroad,
    Matthias

  • Hi Matthias,

Correct, pump only and no skimmer. There is nothing in the back chambers except for a pump, heater and a thermometer. No sump, sponges, filter socks, carbon, etc. I prefer to have the system as free flowing as possible to keep any left over food particles and larvae in circulation as long as possible. The rock structure is set up in the tank center in such a way as to allow for continuous water circulation with minimal obstruction ('Gyre' effect).

The 'Pet Bottles' only supply the top-off water/Kalkwasser mix. They are used for evaporation control, calcium and alkalinity supplementation.

I live too far from the ocean to collect NSW, but I have used it in the past with good results. So, it's great to use if you have it. The parameters will very likely be lower compared to the values that most of us keep our tanks at, but a bit of supplemention can be used if desired.

The Clownfish are captive raised and really should have been culled early on. The black/white has a lump only for a dorsal fin and a crooked mouth and the orange/white is a skinny 'runt' that will stay quite small. They were not in the best condition when I got them and I nursed them back to health. Honestly, the fish are in the tank mainly to provide nutritious waste to the corals, but they are well kept with 2x/day feedings of both dry and wet foods. They seem to be 'happy' since they play all day together inside the Ricordia polyps :)

    Ralph.

  • Hi Ralph,.

but you're a chic, very nicely furnished tank.
Also your refill is a very interesting thing, I didn't know that so well yet.

How do you run the pool? Balling or simply change the water?

  • Hallo Mark,

    Ralph.
